The countdown has started for the FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball World Championships Rome 2011, where the best male and female beach volleyball players around the world will compete for the premier title in international beach volleyball from June 13-19.After hosting a men’s Open in 2009 and a Grand Slam last year, Rome is now ready to host the FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball World Championships in the historic setting of Foro Italico for what will be the eighth edition of the biennial event in its current format after Los Angeles hosted the first in 1997 followed by Marseille, Klagenfurt, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin, Gstaad and Stavanger.
The best 96 pairs – 48 in each gender – in the world will compete for $1million in prize money with Germany’s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann, and Jen Kessy and April Ross from USA the defending men’s and women’s world champions respectively from two years ago in Norway.
The main draw will be composed of 12 pools of four teams competing in a robin round system before the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-paced teams will advance to the 32 spots in the single-elimination phase of the competition.
The FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball World Championships Rome 2011 will be organize by a joint venture between Italian Volleyball Federation and Coni Servizi.

È partito il conto alla rovescia in attesa dello Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship Rome 2011, la rassegna iridata, maschile e femminile, organizzata per la prima volta in Italia. Roma, dunque, dopo l’Open maschile del 2009 e il Grand Slam della scorsa stagione, è pronta ad ospitare i Campionati del Mondo che si terranno dal 13 al 19 giugno nell’incantevole cornice del complesso del Foro Italico.
Quella italiana sarà l’ottava edizione (escludendo quelle non ufficiali disputate in Brasile a partire dal 1987), dopo quelle di Los Angeles, Marsiglia, Klagenfurt, Rio de Janeiro, Berlino, Gstaad e Stavanger.
Le migliori 96 coppie – 48 per ciascun sesso – al mondo si affronteranno in un torneo che decreterà i successori dei tedeschi Brink-Reckermann e delle statunitensi Kessy-Ross, iridati due anni fa in Norvegia.
Il tabellone principale sarà composto da 12 pool, ognuna da 4 coppie, che si affronteranno con la formula del round robin.
Alla fase finale si qualificheranno le prime due classificate più le 8 migliori terze, per un totale di 32 squadre che si affronteranno in gare ad eliminazione diretta.
Il Mondiale di beach volley sarà organizzato in joint venture tra la Federvolley e la Coni Servizi.
